May 2013 Tornado Outbreak

A Devastating Series of Tornadoes

May 20, 2013: The EF5 Moore Tornado

As part of the Tornado outbreak of May 18-21, 2013, a violent EF5 tornado ravaged Moore, Oklahoma, on the afternoon of May 20, 2013. The immense power of this tornado left a devastating trail, tragically claiming the lives of 24 individuals and causing an estimated $2 billion in property damage.

Just 11 days later, central Oklahoma was once again struck by another catastrophic event: the El Reno tornado, which measured an astounding 2.6 miles in width.

Remarkably, Moore, Oklahoma, has endured the impact of five separate tornadoes, four of which were rated as severe, within its history. On the third anniversary of the EF5 Moore tornado, experts have proposed that its intensity may have been exacerbated by another significant tornado that occurred just 11 days prior.
